Lead magnets that convert: what to offer in exchange for an email or phone number

A good lead magnet solves a small, specific problem for the people who are likely to buy from you, and leads naturally to what you sell. Price guides, checklists, calculators, quizzes and samples usually beat generic e-books. Keep the form short, deliver instantly, follow up with a welcome sequence, and judge it by how many sign-ups become customers, not by sign-ups alone.

A lead magnet is whatever you offer in return for someone’s contact details: a guide, a discount, a checklist, a sample. Done well, it fills your list with people who become customers. Done badly, it fills it with people who wanted something free and never come back.

Every guide on this site has a free download. That’s our lead magnet approach, and the reasoning below is what we follow.

What makes a lead magnet work

Check each idea against four tests:

  1. Specific: it solves one clear problem (“What does a deep clean cost for a 2-bed apartment?”), not a broad topic (“The ultimate guide to cleaning”).
  2. Attracts buyers: the people who want it are the people who buy from you.
  3. Leads to your offer: using it makes the next step (buying, booking) feel natural.
  4. Quick to use: value in minutes. Few people finish a 40-page e-book.

Types that work

Type Good for Example
Price guide Service businesses where price is the first question “2026 price guide: kitchen renovation in Dubai”
Checklist Any business where customers prepare or decide “Moving into a new villa: 30-point checklist”
Calculator or quote estimator Services with variable pricing “Estimate your solar savings”
Quiz Products with many options “Find your skincare routine”
First-order offer Stores Free delivery or a modest discount on the first order
Sample, trial or free consultation Products and services people need to try “Free 20-minute design consultation”
Template B2B services “Employee onboarding checklist template”

Generic newsletters (“Subscribe for updates”) are the weakest offer. Few people want more email in general.

The sign-up page and form

  • One page, one offer. A focused landing page usually beats a homepage box. See landing page anatomy.
  • Ask for as little as possible. Baymard’s checkout research found the average checkout has far more fields than needed, and every extra field is a reason to stop. For a lead magnet, email (or phone for WhatsApp) and first name are usually enough. Ask for more only if you’ll use it immediately, for example area for a service business.
  • Separate marketing consent. Delivering the download is one thing. Marketing afterwards needs clear opt-in. See UAE PDPL and marketing consent.
  • Show what they get: a preview image of the guide or the first page of the checklist.

Delivery and follow-up

  • Deliver immediately: on the thank-you page and in the first email.
  • Start a welcome series that builds on the lead magnet: “Here’s how to use the checklist”, then proof, then your offer.
  • For service businesses, a price guide download is a buying signal. Alert your team or create a CRM task so someone follows up personally. See lead nurturing for service businesses.

Measure what matters

Metric What it tells you
Landing page conversion rate Is the offer appealing to the visitors you’re sending?
Cost per sign-up (if using ads) Efficiency of traffic
Sign-up to customer rate Whether it attracts buyers. This is the one to decide on.
Unsubscribes in the first two weeks Whether expectations were set honestly

A lead magnet with fewer sign-ups but twice the customer rate is the better one.

Frequently asked questions

Should we gate our best content?

Gate content that’s specific and practical (tools, price guides, templates). Keep explanatory content open so it can rank in search and be cited by AI assistants. The open article plus a gated tool is a good combination.

Do discount pop-ups count as lead magnets?

Yes, for stores. They work, but attract discount-seekers. Compare the repeat rate of customers acquired that way with others.

How often should we create new lead magnets?

Fewer, better ones beat many. Improve your best one and build a page for it before creating another.
