TikTok has made some small brands famous overnight, which makes it easy to overestimate. For most small stores it’s a channel that works under specific conditions. Here’s how to tell, and how to test it without wasting the budget.
Is TikTok a fit?
Likely yes if:
- Your product is visual or easy to demonstrate in seconds (beauty, fashion, gadgets, home, food)
- Your customers skew younger
- Someone can make several short, natural-looking videos a week, or you can work with creators
- Your price suits impulse purchases
Probably not first if:
- You sell considered, high-value or B2B products
- You can’t produce new video regularly
- Your margins can’t absorb testing costs
Budget minimums
TikTok’s published minimums (checked October 2026):
- Campaign daily budget: must exceed $50
- Ad group daily budget: must exceed $20
- Lifetime budgets: campaign over $50; ad group at least days × $20
TikTok also advises limiting budget increases (no more than 40% per adjustment during learning, 30% after) and not adjusting more often than every two days.
So a meaningful test is at least a few hundred dollars a month, more if you want to optimise directly for purchases. Use the ad budget method to check what’s realistic.
Setup
- TikTok Business Center owned by your business, with an ad account. See who owns your accounts.
- TikTok Pixel and Events API through your store’s integration (Shopify and WooCommerce have TikTok apps/plugins), sending ViewContent, AddToCart, InitiateCheckout and Purchase with values.
- Product catalogue if you’ll run catalogue or shopping ads.
- Test a purchase and check events arrive in TikTok’s Events Manager.
Creative: native beats polished
Ads that look like TikTok content tend to do better than repurposed TV-style ads:
- Hook in the first second or two: a problem, a surprising result, a question
- Show the product in use, handheld, natural light, real voice
- Captions on screen, since many watch without sound
- One clear message and call to action
- Creators and customers: user-generated videos often outperform brand-made ones
Spark Ads let you promote existing organic posts (yours or a creator’s, with their authorisation), keeping likes and comments as social proof.

A 4-week test
| Week | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | One campaign, one ad group, 4–6 different videos (different hooks/angles). Optimise for add to cart or purchase, depending on budget. |
| 2 | Leave it running. Pause only clear losers. |
| 3 | Make 2–3 variations of the best video (new hook, new opening shot). |
| 4 | Compare cost per order with your target, using store data. Decide: scale gradually, change offer, or stop. |
Judge on your orders
TikTok’s reported conversions use its own attribution. Compare with:
- Store orders during the test, especially new customers
- Orders with TikTok UTMs or discount codes from TikTok
- Blended cost per order across all channels

Frequently asked questions
Do we need to post organically too?
It helps: organic posts give you creative to test with Spark Ads and build trust when people check your profile.
Can we use the same videos as on Instagram Reels?
Often yes, if they look native to both. Remove watermarks from other apps.
