Checked 23 October 2026. Meta renames and reorganises Advantage+ features often. The principles below hold, but menu names in Ads Manager may differ from what you see. We review this guide quarterly.
Advantage+ is Meta’s name for the automated parts of its ad system. Rather than defining an audience and placements yourself, you give Meta a goal, a budget and creative, and its AI decides who sees which ad, where. For many advertisers it now performs at least as well as manual setups. But “automated” doesn’t mean “nothing to decide”.
What Advantage+ automates
Depending on the campaign and the settings you leave on:
- Audience: Meta finds people likely to act, using signals such as past conversions, Meta Pixel data and interactions with previous ads. Any audience you add is treated as a suggestion, not a limit.
- Placements: Meta spreads delivery across Facebook, Instagram and its other placements.
- Creative: variations and enhancements to your ads, and choosing which ad shows to whom.
- Budget: moving spend between ad sets or ads that perform better.
For sales, leads and app campaigns, Meta recommends its full Advantage+ campaigns, which apply AI across all of these steps. Turning on Advantage+ audience alone is the middle ground: AI finds the audience, you keep the rest manual.
Meta publishes average cost-per-result improvements for Advantage+ audience by objective (for example 7.2% lower for sales). Those are Meta’s averages across advertisers, not a promise for your account. Test it yourself.
What you still control
Hard limits (Meta won’t go past these)
Meta’s documentation lists the audience controls Advantage+ audience won’t expand beyond:
- Location
- Minimum age
- Language
- Custom audience exclusions (for example, existing customers)
Some of these can also be set at account level, so they apply to every campaign. This includes a minimum age between 18 and 25 and excluded locations. Use account-level controls for real business constraints, such as a service you can only deliver in one emirate.
Inputs that decide results
Automation optimises whatever you give it. These are entirely yours:
| Input | Why it matters more with automation |
|---|---|
| Conversion event | The AI chases what you call a conversion. Use purchases or qualified leads, not page views. |
| Tracking quality | Missing or duplicated events teach it the wrong thing. See Conversions API and enhanced conversions. |
| Creative | With broad audiences, the creative does the targeting: who stops scrolling decides who converts. |
| Offer and landing page | Automation can’t fix a weak offer or a slow page. See ads get clicks but no sales. |
| Budget | Too small to reach about 50 results a week and the ad set stays in learning. See how much to spend on ads. |
| Attribution setting | Decides which conversions count, and so what the system optimises for. |
When to override it
Keep manual control, or add strict controls, when:
- Retargeting. Meta says Advantage+ audience isn’t recommended for retargeting campaigns. If you want to reach past visitors only, define that audience yourself.
- Your service area is small. A home-services business that only covers part of Dubai should set location as a hard control, not a suggestion.
- Age or category rules apply to your product. Set minimum age as a control, and check Meta’s advertising policies for your category.
- You want new customers only. Exclude existing customers with a custom audience, or the system may find it easiest to “convert” people who would have bought anyway.
- Brand safety needs. Review placement and content controls if some placements are unsuitable for your brand.
How to test it properly
Don’t switch everything at once. Meta recommends A/B testing Advantage+ audience for most campaign types:
- Keep your current best campaign as the control.
- Create the Advantage+ version with the same conversion event, budget, creative and attribution setting.
- Use Ads Manager’s A/B test so audiences don’t overlap.
- Run it long enough for both to leave the learning phase, and avoid edits during the test, since significant edits reset learning.
- Judge on cost per real sale or qualified lead, checked against your own orders or CRM, not only on Meta’s reported numbers.
Weekly review: what to check
- Results and cost per result against your target
- Frequency (how often the same people see the ads) and creative fatigue
- Placement and age breakdowns: anything spending without converting?
- New customers vs existing customers, if you can measure it
- Lead quality from your CRM, for lead campaigns
Frequently asked questions
Do we still need audience research?
Yes, but its job changes. You use it to shape creative and offers that attract the right people, rather than to build detailed targeting.
Is Advantage+ worth it on a small budget?
It can be, because it removes the need to split budget across many audiences. The volume problem doesn’t go away, though: one well-funded campaign beats several thin ones.
Why did results drop after we edited the campaign?
Significant edits can send an ad set back into the learning phase, where costs are usually higher and less stable. Batch your changes and make them less often.
