Ads get clicks but no sales? A diagnostic checklist

When ads get clicks but no sales, check in this order: is the sale or enquiry actually being tracked; are the clicks from the right people (search terms, placements, locations); does the landing page match the ad's promise; is the page easy to act on from a phone; is the offer and price competitive; and are enquiries followed up quickly. Most problems show up in the first three checks.

Clicks without sales is one of the most expensive problems a small business can have, because it costs money every day it goes unnoticed. The good news: it almost always has a findable cause. The bad news: the cause is often not the ad itself.

Work through these checks in order, before changing budgets or creative.

1. Is the sale or enquiry actually being tracked?

Sometimes the sales are happening and the ad platform just can’t see them.

  • Look: in Google Ads (Goals → Conversions) and Meta Events Manager, is there a conversion action for purchases or leads, and is it recording?
  • Test: make a test purchase or enquiry from a phone and check it appears, with the right value.
  • Common causes: the thank-you page was changed, the tag was removed in a theme update, WhatsApp and calls aren’t tracked at all, or the conversion is counted twice (by a platform tag and an analytics import).
  • More: Conversions API and enhanced conversions, UTM naming.

If tracking is broken, fix it first. The platforms’ automated bidding learns from conversions, so broken tracking also makes the targeting worse.

2. Are the clicks from the right people?

  • Google Search: open the search terms report. It shows what people actually typed before clicking, which is often broader than your keywords. Look for job seekers, “free”, DIY, competitors’ brand names, other cities and unrelated services. Add negative keywords.
  • Performance Max and Display: check where ads appeared, including placements such as apps and websites, as far as the platform shows them.
  • Meta: look at the breakdowns by placement, age and region. Watch for very cheap clicks from one placement that never convert.
  • Location: make sure campaigns target people in your service area, not people “interested in” it, if you only serve the UAE or one emirate.

3. Does the landing page match the ad’s promise?

If the ad says “Deep cleaning for villas from AED X” and the click lands on a generic homepage, many visitors leave.

  • Look: open each ad and its landing page side by side.
  • Fix: send each campaign to the page for that specific service or product, with the same words, price signal and offer as the ad. See landing page or homepage for your ads.

4. Can visitors act easily on a phone?

Most ad clicks are on phones.

  • Look: is the main action visible without scrolling? Do the WhatsApp and phone links work? How long is the form? Is the page fast? Google’s “good” thresholds are LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP of 200 ms or less and CLS of 0.1 or less.
  • Fix: see your website gets traffic but no enquiries, which has 12 quick checks.

5. Is the offer competitive?

Sometimes everything works and people still compare and leave.

  • Look: search for your service as a customer would. What do the top three competitors offer, at what price, with what guarantee and delivery time?
  • Fix: you don’t have to be cheapest. You have to make the difference obvious: speed, guarantee, quality, convenience, or a smaller first step such as a free inspection or quote by WhatsApp.

6. For stores: does checkout lose them?

  • Look: compare add-to-cart, checkout-started and purchases for ad traffic.
  • Fix: surprise delivery costs, forced accounts and missing payment methods are the usual causes. See why shoppers abandon checkout.

7. For lead businesses: are enquiries followed up?

“No sales” sometimes means “enquiries that went cold”.

  • Look: how many enquiries came from ads last month, and how long did each wait for a reply?
  • Fix: route ad leads straight into a CRM with an instant alert. See the form-to-CRM workflow. Then send outcomes back to the ad platforms so they optimise for real customers, not form fills. See offline conversions.

How to read the results

What you find Likely problem First move
Clicks fine, conversions zero, test order not recorded Tracking Fix tracking before anything else
Many irrelevant search terms or placements Targeting Negatives, placement exclusions, location settings
Relevant clicks, high bounce from landing page Message match or mobile UX Dedicated landing page
Engaged visitors, few actions Offer or friction Smaller first step, clearer price signal, shorter form
Enquiries arrive, few become customers Follow-up or lead quality Speed to lead, qualify in the form, send outcomes back to the platforms

Before you cut the budget

Pausing ads stops the cost, but you lose the learning too. If tracking is fixed and the clicks are relevant, run a focused test: one campaign, one landing page, one offer, for long enough to get meaningful numbers. How much to spend on ads shows how to size that test.

Frequently asked questions

Is it the ad creative?

Sometimes, but creative usually affects who clicks, which shows up in check 2. If the clicks are relevant and still don’t convert, the problem is after the click.

How many clicks before we can judge?

It depends on your conversion rate and price. A few dozen clicks is rarely enough to judge a campaign. A few hundred relevant clicks with zero conversions is a strong signal that something after the click is broken.

Should we switch from Meta to Google, or the other way round?

Only after these checks. The same tracking, landing page and offer problems follow you to any platform.
