On a phone, most people who are ready to act want to call or message, not fill in a form. If the button to do that is hidden in the footer, too small, or opens the wrong number, you lose them.
Which buttons?
Pick the two actions most of your customers prefer:
| Business | Primary | Secondary |
|---|---|---|
| Home services, clinics, salons | Call | |
| Restaurants, cafés | Order / reserve | Call |
| Online store | Add to cart (on product pages) | WhatsApp for questions |
| B2B services | Book a call |
More than two options in a sticky bar becomes clutter.
Get the links right
Call
<a href="tel:+97145551234">Call us</a>
International format with +971, no spaces or zeros after the country code.
WhatsApp’s click-to-chat format is https://wa.me/<number>, with the full number in international format and no +, zeros, brackets or dashes:
<a href="https://wa.me/97145551234?text=Hi%2C%20I%27m%20asking%20about%20deep%20cleaning">WhatsApp us</a>
Add a pre-filled message per page (URL-encoded) so you know what they’re asking about before they type, for example “Hi, I’m asking about deep cleaning”. It also helps you route the chat and attribute the enquiry.
If you use the WhatsApp Business Platform with a shared inbox or CRM, the same link works. See WhatsApp enquiries to your CRM.
Booking
Link to a booking page that works well on mobile, with your services and availability, not a generic contact form.
Size and placement
- Sticky bottom bar on mobile with the two buttons, or a prominent button in the first screen plus repeats down the page.
- Big enough to tap: WCAG 2.2 sets a minimum target size of 24 by 24 CSS pixels (with exceptions), and larger is easier. Aim for buttons a thumb can hit without zooming, with space between them.
- Clear labels: “WhatsApp us” and “Call now” beat icons alone.
- Don’t cover content: make sure a sticky bar doesn’t hide cookie banners, form buttons or the checkout button.
Track every tap
Without tracking you can’t tell which pages and campaigns create enquiries:
- In Google Tag Manager, trigger events on clicks where the link starts with
tel:or containswa.me. - Name them consistently (
click_to_call,click_whatsapp) and mark them as key events in GA4. - Use them as conversions in Google Ads and Meta if calls and chats are your main enquiries. Remember a tap isn’t a booking. Compare with your CRM.
See analytics setup.
Make sure someone answers
A button that leads to an unanswered phone or an unread WhatsApp is worse than no button.
- Show hours near the buttons if you don’t answer 24/7.
- Set an automatic WhatsApp away message with when you’ll reply.
- Measure time to first reply. See lead nurturing for service businesses.
Test on real phones
Before and after any change:
- iPhone and Android, mobile data
- Call button opens the dialler with the right number
- WhatsApp button opens the right chat with the pre-filled message (app installed, and not installed)
- Sticky bar doesn’t cover anything important
- Each tap fires one analytics event
Common mistakes
wa.me/+971…orwa.me/0097…formats that don’t open the chat- Personal numbers on buttons that leave with the employee
- Phone numbers shown as images (can’t be tapped)
- Buttons only in the footer
- Different numbers on the website, Google Business Profile and ads
Frequently asked questions
Should we use the official “Chat on WhatsApp” button?
You can. WhatsApp provides branded buttons in green and white, currently in English only. A clear text button in your own design also works.
Will a WhatsApp button reduce form enquiries?
It often moves enquiries from the form to WhatsApp, and can increase the total. Track both and judge by bookings.
Can we track which ad led to a WhatsApp chat?
Partly: the click event in analytics carries the campaign, and a pre-filled message per landing page helps. Click-to-WhatsApp ads also report conversations in Meta.
