If you ask most small business owners where their best customers come from, the answer is “recommendations”. A referral program doesn’t create word of mouth, but it gives happy customers a reason and an easy way to pass your name on, and lets you see it happening.
Step 1: can you afford a reward?
Start with what a new customer is worth:
- Gross profit on a first order or job
- Plus expected repeat business (if customers come back)
Then decide how much of that you’ll spend to win a referred customer. It’s usually cheaper than paid ads, because referred customers arrive already trusting you. The planner does the maths.
Step 2: choose the reward
| Reward type | Good for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Two-sided discount | Stores, repeat services | “Give AED 50, get AED 50” |
| Credit on next order | Repeat purchases | AED 50 credit for each friend who orders |
| Free add-on or upgrade | Services | Free sofa cleaning with your next deep clean |
| Donation | Purpose-driven brands | AED 20 to a charity per referral |
| Cash / vouchers | B2B services with high deal values | Fixed amount after the referred client pays |
Two-sided rewards (the friend gets something too) usually work better: the referrer is giving a gift, not selling.
Pay the reward after the referred customer’s first order is completed or paid, not at sign-up.
Step 3: make it easy
- A unique code or link per customer (many store and email platforms, or referral apps, generate these)
- Share buttons for WhatsApp, the way most UAE customers share recommendations
- A simple page explaining how it works, with the rules
Step 4: ask at the right moment
- After a successful delivery or job, once they’ve had time to enjoy it
- When they leave a high rating or say thank you
- In your post-purchase flow. See post-purchase flows.
Keep referral requests separate from review requests. Google prohibits offering incentives for reviews, so never link a referral reward to leaving a Google review.
Step 5: track it
Record for each referral: who referred, who was referred, date, first order, reward issued. Codes or links do this automatically in most tools. For service businesses, add a “referred by” field in the CRM.
Rules to respect
- Contacting referred friends: don’t take friends’ phone numbers or emails from the referrer and start marketing to them. Let the referrer share your link; the friend gives their own details and consent. This keeps you within the UAE data protection law and WhatsApp’s opt-in policy.
- Clear terms: reward amount, when it’s issued, expiry, limits, exclusions.
- Abuse: limit rewards per customer, block self-referrals (same address, payment card or phone), and review unusual patterns.
What to measure
| Metric | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Share of customers who refer | Whether people know about the program |
| Referrals per referrer | How easy and appealing sharing is |
| Referred-customer conversion | Whether the friend’s offer works |
| Reward cost per new customer | Compare with ad cost per new customer |
| Repeat rate of referred customers | Referred customers are often more loyal; check yours |
Frequently asked questions
Do we need a referral app?
Not to start. A unique discount code per customer and a spreadsheet or CRM field can work. Apps help once volume grows.
What reward amount works?
Enough to be worth sharing, small enough to be profitable. Test two levels if you’re unsure.
Can we run referrals on WhatsApp?
Yes: customers share your link with their own contacts. Your business should only message people who’ve opted in themselves.
