Landing page vs homepage: where should your ads and campaigns send people?

A homepage serves everyone: new visitors, returning customers, job seekers, partners. A landing page serves one audience with one offer and one action. Send paid traffic to the page that matches the ad's promise: a landing page for a specific offer, a service page for a specific service, a product or collection page for a specific product. Use the homepage only for brand searches and broad awareness.

You pay for a click from someone who searched “deep cleaning 2 bedroom apartment Dubai”. They land on your homepage: a slider about your company values, six services, a blog and a careers link. They have to work out where to go next. Many don’t.

Where you send a click matters as much as the ad itself.

What each page is for

Homepage Landing page
Audience Everyone One audience
Goal Orientation: who are you, where do I go? One action: book, buy, enquire, download
Navigation Full menu Minimal or none
Content Broad overview Everything about one offer, nothing else
Best for Brand searches, direct visits, broad awareness Ads, email campaigns, specific offers

Match the page to the promise

The rule is simple: the page should continue the conversation the ad started. Google Ads’ own landing page experience rating looks at whether the page is relevant and useful to people who click, and related to the keyword and what they searched for.

Ad or campaign Send to
“Deep cleaning from AED X” (search ad) Deep cleaning service page, or a landing page for that offer
“Ramadan offer: 20% off sofa cleaning” A landing page for the offer, with its terms
Product ad for a specific dress That product page
“New summer collection” (Instagram) The collection page
Brand search: “[Your business name]” Homepage is fine
Lead magnet (“Free price guide”) Dedicated sign-up page

Signs the homepage is costing you

  • Ads get clicks but few enquiries. See ads get clicks but no sales.
  • High share of visitors leave from the homepage without visiting another page.
  • Google Ads shows “below average” landing page experience for your keywords.
  • People call to ask about the offer they saw, because the page doesn’t mention it.

Landing page or service page?

You don’t always need a separate landing page:

  • A good service page (one service, clear price information, proof, visible contact options) works well for search ads about that service. See service pages that rank and convert.
  • Build a separate landing page when the campaign has a specific offer, audience or time limit that doesn’t belong on the permanent service page, or when you want to test a different message without changing the main site.

Building a landing page quickly

Most website platforms (WordPress, Webflow, Shopify, Wix) let you create a page without the main navigation. Keep it focused:

  1. Headline that repeats the ad’s promise
  2. The offer: what’s included, price, terms, deadline
  3. Proof: reviews, photos of real work, numbers
  4. One clear action, repeated: WhatsApp, call or a short form
  5. Answers to the top objections

Landing page anatomy covers each section in detail.

Add noindex to short-term campaign pages you don’t want in search results, and remove expired offers or redirect them when the campaign ends.

Measure by page

Compare conversion rate (enquiries or sales ÷ visits) by landing page in your analytics, with UTMs on non-Google campaigns. Give each version enough traffic before deciding. A few dozen visits can’t tell you which page is better. See A/B testing with low traffic.

Frequently asked questions

Doesn’t removing navigation look suspicious?

Not if the page includes your brand, contact details and proof. A logo that links to the homepage is fine. The point is to avoid distractions, not to trap people.

How many landing pages do we need?

One per distinct offer or audience you advertise. Most small businesses need a handful, not dozens.

Can we use our Google Business Profile or Instagram profile instead?

For some local searches and social campaigns, a WhatsApp-click ad or lead form ad may work better than a web page. When you do send people to the web, send them to the most specific page.
