For many UAE businesses (clinics, salons, restaurants, home services, car services) the Google Business Profile brings more calls and visits than the website. It’s free, but it has rules, and profiles that break them can be suspended.
How Google ranks local results
Google says local results are based mainly on three things:
- Relevance: how well your profile matches the search. Complete, accurate information helps.
- Distance: how far you are from the searcher, or the location in their search. You can’t change this.
- Prominence: how well-known you are, using signals such as links to your website and the number of reviews and ratings.
The checklist below works on relevance and prominence.
Setup checklist
Ownership
- Profile created and verified under a business Google account, not an employee’s personal one
- At least two people from the business as owners. Agencies added as managers. See who owns your accounts.
Name
- Exactly as it appears on your signage, licence and branding
- No added keywords or locations (“Best AC Repair Dubai Marina” when you’re called “CoolFix”). It’s against Google’s guidelines and a common reason for suspension.
Categories
- Primary category as specific as possible for your main business (“Dental clinic”, not “Health”)
- Additional categories only for real, core services. Google says to use the fewest categories needed and not to use categories as keywords. You can add up to 9 more.
Address or service area
- If customers visit you: your exact address, with permanent signage. Virtual offices aren’t eligible. Co-working spaces only qualify with signage, staff present and customers received during business hours.
- If you go to customers (cleaning, maintenance, mobile car wash): hide the address and set a service area. Up to 20 areas (cities, districts), within about 2 hours’ drive of your base. Radius-based areas are no longer supported.
- Hybrid businesses (a workshop that also does call-outs): address plus service area.
- One profile per business. Separate profiles only for genuinely separate locations with their own staff.
Contact and hours
- Phone number answered during the listed hours
- Website link to the most relevant page (often a location or service page, not just the homepage)
- Regular hours accurate. Special hours set for Ramadan, Eid, National Day and other holidays.
- Appointment or booking link if your category supports it
Services, products and description
- Services listed with clear names (and prices where you publish them)
- Description that says what you do, for whom and where, without keyword stuffing or links
- Attributes relevant to customers (for example, wheelchair accessible, women-led, online appointments)
Photos
- Logo and cover photo
- Real photos of your premises, team and work (not stock images)
- Exterior photo that helps people find the entrance
Maintenance: a monthly routine
| Task | Why |
|---|---|
| Check hours and special hours for the coming month | Wrong hours cost visits and trust |
| Add a few new photos | Shows the business is active |
| Reply to every new review | Shows you listen. See how to get more Google reviews. |
| Check for suggested edits from Google or the public | Others can suggest changes to your details |
| Post an update or offer if you use posts | Keeps the profile fresh. Follow Google’s posting rules. |
| Review the performance report (calls, direction requests, website clicks) | Shows what the profile delivers |
Mistakes that cause suspension or lost rankings
- Keywords or locations added to the business name
- Using a virtual office or an address without signage or staff
- Several profiles for the same business
- Paying for reviews, offering discounts for reviews, or asking only happy customers
- Changing the name, address or category frequently without a real change in the business
If you move, update the address: you’ll need to verify again.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn’t my profile show for searches in other areas?
Distance is a ranking factor you can’t override. Service-area businesses should list the areas they actually serve and build relevant pages on their website for those areas. See local SEO for service-area businesses.
Should we include the area in our business name to rank better?
No. It’s against the guidelines unless it’s genuinely part of your registered and signed name.
How long does verification take?
Google offers several verification methods, depending on the business and its category, and times vary. Keep your details consistent with your website and signage to avoid delays.
