Local SEO for service-area businesses: ranking across the areas you serve

Service-area businesses can't rank everywhere from one address, because distance is a local ranking factor. Set an accurate service area on your Google Business Profile (address hidden if customers don't visit), build strong service pages that name the areas you cover, create separate area pages only when you can make them genuinely useful, earn reviews that mention real jobs, and keep your business details consistent across directories.

Cleaning companies, AC technicians, pest control, mobile car wash, movers, home tutors: if you go to the customer, you want to appear in searches across many areas, not only around your office. Local SEO for service-area businesses works differently from a shop with a front door.

The constraint: distance

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Distance to the searcher (or the place in their search) is something you can’t change. So a business based in Al Quoz won’t appear in the map results for every Dubai district. Your organic (website) results can reach further, if your pages are relevant.

1. Set up the Business Profile correctly

  • Hide your address if customers don’t come to you. Google’s guidelines say service-area businesses shouldn’t show a home or office address customers don’t visit.
  • Set service areas by city or district: up to 20, within about 2 hours’ driving of your base.
  • Don’t create profiles at addresses you don’t staff (virtual offices aren’t allowed).
  • Complete everything else. See the Google Business Profile checklist.

2. Strong service pages that name your areas

One page per main service, listing the areas you cover, with real details (travel times, any area-specific notes). This is the core of your organic visibility. See service pages that rank and convert.

3. Area pages: only if they’re genuinely useful

Separate pages per area (“Deep cleaning in JLT”) can help, but Google’s spam policies call out doorway pages: many similar pages targeting places, funnelling to the same content. Create an area page only if you can include:

  • Real jobs done there (photos, short case notes, with permission)
  • Reviews from customers in that area
  • Specifics: building access, parking, typical property types, response times
  • Local team or availability details

If an area page would only change the place name, list the area on the service page instead.

4. Reviews that mention real work

Reviews are a prominence signal. Ask every customer (no incentives, no gating); customers naturally mention the service and often the area. Don’t ask them to include keywords. See how to get more Google reviews.

5. Consistent details everywhere

Name, phone, website and service description should match across your website, Business Profile, social profiles and directories relevant in the UAE. Inconsistent details confuse customers and the tools that summarise businesses.

6. Earn local mentions

Partnerships with property managers, building communities, local suppliers, sponsorships and local press bring links and mentions that build prominence.

What to measure

  • Business Profile: calls, website clicks and direction requests, and the searches showing your profile
  • Search Console: clicks for service + area queries
  • Enquiries by area in your CRM (add an “area” field)

Frequently asked questions

Can we open profiles in several areas to rank more widely?

Only for real locations with their own staff and signage. Fake locations risk suspension.

Should our business name include the area or service?

No, unless it’s genuinely your registered and signed name. Adding keywords breaks Google’s guidelines.

Will Google Ads help in areas where we don’t rank?

Yes. Location-targeted Search ads can cover areas where organic and map visibility is weak. See Google Ads for local service businesses.
